There are parties…and then there are the ones that matter. The ones where every person in the room is someone you love, where the food is made with your own hands, where the flowers are almost too beautiful to look at and the laughter goes late into the evening. My daughter Lauren’s 40th birthday was that kind of party. And it deserved every bit of effort we put into it.

I’ve been cooking for this family for a long time and nothing makes me happier than feeding the people I love most. For Lauren’s party I made a smoked chicken salad…smoked chicken that I smoked myself, on a bed of mixed greens, topped with crumbled bacon, fresh blueberries and toasted pecans, finished with a blueberry vinaigrette. It’s as pretty as it is delicious and it feeds a crowd beautifully because the elements can be done ahead and put together at the last minute. I also made a fresh mozzarella salad with pesto…simple, bright and perfect for spring. My son-in-law brought his world famous tenderloin, which is always the moment everyone has been waiting for…including me!

I always go overboard with the flowers and they were extraordinary…a gorgeous arrangement with a mix of peach, pink, fuchsia, orange and cream. Ranunculus, roses, gerber daisies, tulips and lisianthus…it was the kind of arrangement that makes you stop and just look. Pillar candles in crystal holders flanked the arrangement and cast the most beautiful light across the dining room all evening. When you get the flowers right, everything else falls into place.

We’ve been hosting big family gatherings in this house for years…and I’ve learned that the secret is in the details and the preparation. Having the right pieces matters…the large platters, the vintage silver, the right glasses, the serving pieces that have been collected over time. When you have everything you need, you can focus on the people instead of the logistics.

We also set up a memory board in the dining room and encouraged guests to bring photos of themselves with Lauren through the years. Watching people look at the photos and laugh and remember, was one of my favorite parts of the whole evening.

A great cheese board is an art form…and this one was no exception. Set on my vintage silver tray, it had a selection of our favorite cheeses, prosciutto, pistachios, grapes, kumquats, and a cherry jam along with a spicy one. It was the first thing people gathered around and it disappeared quickly. I’ve found that a beautiful board on a beautiful tray needs very little else…it’s something everyone loves!

Lauren has celiac disease so gluten free is non-negotiable at our table. Her husband made her a homemade gluten free carrot cake…because of course he did. There was also a chocolate cake for good measure and both disappeared completely!

The whole family was able to make it to the party which was actually on Lauren’s birthday! All three daughters and their husbands, all five grandchildren, friends who have been part of our lives for years. We had a fire going in the outdoor fireplace and the evening was perfect…cool enough to feel like spring and warm enough to be outside. I love it when we’re all together and one of the best parts…we were able to get a Christmas card shot with everyone!

It’s not every day your oldest daughter turns 40. It deserves a celebration worthy of who she is…and Lauren is worth every single bit of it. Happy birthday Lauren…forty looks so good on you!
