I find it so interesting how when we start to go down a path of self discovery and start to figure things out…we expect ourselves to be perfect and because we talk about it and try to share what we’ve discovered in the hopes of helping others, the people we’re talking to…expect perfection, or they at least expect that we don’t talk about problems anymore.
I remember one comment on this blog…which I deleted, that said…”Every few years, you talk about your bad marriage”. How strange that someone would say that. Even though I thought it was a strange comment and a rude comment, I was clueless about how to respond. I kept thinking…Is that true…do people think that?
I will tell you honestly, my marriage has been in the complete toilet and it has been great and it has also been somewhere in between, but here I am. Still married. Still trying to work on myself and in turn, work on my marriage. I know that every single thing that has happened to me…no exceptions…I brought on myself. The bad things, the good things…everything! That’s a hard pill to swallow. But, I know that I was supposed to learn something from every hard experience that ever happened to me. Here’s something I heard today that nearly brought me to my knees…
Dear God, Please don’t waste my suffering.
What in the world does that mean? Here’s what I think it means. I think that our suffering teaches us and in turn, we teach others, so it isn’t wasted!
Pretending that your life is perfect, that you don’t have problems, that your heart doesn’t ache because of something you’re going through will take you down a long, dark, hard road. We are human and experiencing the lows and the highs in life is normal. The lows hopefully teach us to celebrate the highs. How do you ever know what you want if you don’t know what you don’t want? That’s what conflict and suffering teach us.
Is my life better than it has ever been…the answer is yes! Do I still have hard days…the answer is yes! And I will tell you this…life is supposed to be good and easy and we are meant to have our hearts desire, but that doesn’t mean we won’t feel pain and our hearts won’t hurt.
We are surrounded by other people on different stages of their journey. And some of those people are people we love with all our hearts. We hurt for them, we have conflict with them and we also celebrate with them. You can’t live in a bubble where things are always perfect and you wouldn’t want to. Human interaction is what we all crave, even though it hurts sometimes. Going through tough times with people we love…helping people we barely know who are in need, praying for the world during times of terrible suffering. These are things that are part of the human experience. We can’t go through our whole lives “relaxing”.
Yes…we can trust that things are always working out for the greater good. Yes…we can pray for world peace and for peace in our homes. Yes…we can love with all our hearts and meditate and pray. But, we will still have bad days, we will still fight with our partners, our children and our friends and it’s ok, because our capacity to love transcends all of that. Our connection to the Power and the Oneness of the Universe will take us through anything if we let it.
So to wrap this up, clearly no one is perfect. No matter how much we’ve figured out the secret to life, and no matter how much we meditate and pray, we still have to deal with each other and it’s going to be messy, hard, beautiful, fun, amazing, painful and in the end…what life is all about!
❤️❤️❤️
I disagree with your statement that “life is supposed to be good and easy.” Yes, we can have good moments and easy moments, but life has given us absolutely no indication that it was meant to be good and easy. Life throws so much at us every day. What we ARE given is the ability to cope with what’s handed to us and deal with both the good and bad. Covid has been neither good nor easy even for the ones who haven’t caught the virus. What about the people in Afghanistan? Why are they the exception to “life being good and easy”? What about the 14 soldiers who lost their lives there? What about the parents, family, and friends they left behind? I could go on and on with this list. It’s just good for thought.
Hi Cindy
I so appreciate your comment! I tried to address this when talking about the heartbreak of world events. There are things that I don’t understand, but I do believe that we as humans cause so many of our own problems. Please know that my heart does ache for so many in the world today and I pray that we figure out how to live in peace.
As we speak…my mom who is 87 years old is in the hospital. We don’t know what is going on and I’m feeling really stressed. so maybe easy wasn’t the best word, but good I definitely still believe. We just have to figure out how to get there and I do believe that we are evolving and a big spiritual shift is happening right now. It’s very chaotic in the world, but all great change is preceded by chaos.
Thank you for your response. I hope your mother pulls through. And I hope she’s not in any pain. My father passed away this past Sunday. With the death of someone close, life allows time for reflection on your own life’s meaning. I try to take advantage of that. Wishing you peace and calmness through what is happening right now. And it definitely is not easy. The good comes in what we give out to everyone and also when we are gone, what our legacy is that we leave behind.
Hi Cindy
I’m so sorry to hear about your father. It’s never an easy thing to lose a parent even when you know it’s coming. I lost my dad in 2018 and it takes a while for the pain to turn into good memories, but it does come.
My mom is going to be 88 in December and her dementia is progressing, but for know she is better. Thank you for your kind and very wise words. Sending you love and peace during this time. I know it’s very hard.
I love you and "Baldy"! You are the cutest couple! And whether you know it or not, the two of you are a "love match". You do not have a bad marriage. You have a good marriage. NO marriage is perfect! Go a little easy on him as he’s out there killing it (and killing himself!) trying to make it happen for you and your 3 daughters and now – grandkids! (Don’t worry – I know you work hard too!) And Men are SO different from women! That’s how it’s always been and how it will always be. And no two people are the same even within families! I have so much wisdom now about life, people, relationships, and marriage especially, as I have also really struggled at times in my marriage. I’m happy (and proud) to report that these past years up to present day, have been great. And I know, like you and Baldy, we’re going to go all the way. We’ve both matured like fine wine and we can look back, and forwards to the future, and laugh – like old "war buddies". 🙂 I am always rooting for you and your family – for each of you individually and collectively. You all hang in there, help each other, and stay the course. The "field" has thinned and you’re headed to the "Winners Circle". Lots of champagne and red roses!
Hi Barbara
I always love your comments! You make me feel so good and hopeful about things!
Our marriage is better than it’s ever been at this point, and you are so right…it will never be perfect because we’re human. I’m learning little nuggets every day that help me to be a stronger person and I know that two people who have it together individually will be better together as a result. Reliving the past does nothing but keep difficult times in the present and keeps us from moving on. That was a hard lesson for me to learn, but it’s made all the difference.
Looking forward to lots of champagne and red roses! You’re the best!
P.S. A sweet film which focuses on a marriage is "The Magic of Ordinary Days". I just saw it and I recommend that you watch it too (without Baldy or any kids). There’s nothing weird about it – it’s very slow at the beginning/first half. But I thought there are many lessons from it. And the ending is positive – so you won’t be "wrecked" or upset after watching. All my love!
Hi Barbara
Thank you for the suggestion. I will watch this ASAP! I don’t get a lot of time these days to sneak off by myself, but I’ll make it happen eventually!
Suzanne, big hugs and Xoxo to you for this thoughtful post. Always a help while i am navigating turbulent waters in my life.
