Walk and talk as if you are a confident, beautiful, successful, abundant, happy person. You get to decide whether you let negative emotions and anger take control over your life or if you use your time to practice gratitude, meditate, visualize, and choose kindness toward yourself and others. This is the ultimate kind of self care because it actually changes you in a positive way.
Making amazing memories…it sounds so romantic and we all want to have good memories, but what does that mean…does it just happen, or do we have to be purposeful?
Our family has been vacationing on Bald Head Island for over 30 years and this place brings back so many emotions and memories for me…not all of them good, but some of them I’ll treasure forever.
I’ve watched my children grow up here and they love it. Every time we talk about the possibility of selling this house and going to another beach….one that’s a little easier to get to, they freak out. Their memories are here…it feels like home so this is where they want to be!
I have come to believe that you can create your life with the goal of making amazing memories…and then, one day, look back on a beautiful life. Wow, I sure wish I had known this earlier in life, but I have learned so much in the past few years about living intentionally and the importance of staying in the present moment.
I realized several years ago that every time I came here, all the bad memories came flooding back and I turned into a very grumpy person that no one wanted to be around. Even though I could have focused on the good memories and set out to make more good memories, for some reason I chose not to do that. Even this trip, I felt myself falling into the same pattern.
If you’re always holding on to the emotions of your past, they will definitely influence your future, or ruin your beach trip. Everything happens for a reason and adversity is meant to teach us and allow us to do great things and teach others, but you have to let go of the emotion of bad memories and stop reliving them.
This means…reprogramming your brain because the truth is, your brain doesn’t care if you’re happy, it’s just trying to protect you. The main purpose of your brain is to keep you safe and make sure you survive so it sets out to warn you of all the negative things that could possibly happen…again. You’re not crazy, it’s just how we’re wired and it served us when we were cave men and women!
An article published in the National Science Foundation several years ago pointed out that 80% of our thoughts are negative, and more than 90% are exactly the same thoughts as the day before. When I talk about living the same day, day after day…that’s what I mean. Our thoughts keep us in an endless loop of living the same day over and over again. Why in the world would I want to relive the bad memories that hurt so much…so long ago.
When I realized this was happening, it took me only about a day to turn it around. At first, I was really mad at myself for even going there, but then I realized that even 2 or 3 years ago, I would have stayed in a funk for much longer. This time, however, I was able to take some time for myself and do a guided meditation by Dr. Joe Dispenza that really brought me back to where I needed to be. I have made a commitment to do this meditation for 30 days because it was so powerful and I think it’s going to be so helpful!
It is totally possible to reprogram your mind and when you realize that, it will have a profound effect on your life. That’s why I talk about it all the time!
I’m sure you’ve heard the saying that “you have to believe something before you can see it”. It’s been scientifically proven that your brain doesn’t know the difference between a powerful visualization and a powerful memory…meaning, you can actually start to believe and act as if the future you want is already here…right now! You can learn to choose your thoughts, which leads to changes in your emotions, and that will change the way you act and what you are able create in your life.
I’m not going to tell you that negative thoughts won’t come up from time to time, and I’m not going to tell you that you can sit down to meditate and realize you’re making a grocery list instead of meditating. The point of meditation is to access stillness, but also to be the observer of your thoughts. Meditation is not some new age weird thing. Consistent meditation changes your brain and therefore your life because it allows you to have access to something much larger than yourself.
You can’t always control the thoughts that bounce around in your mind. But you can control what you focus on and eventually, even if it’s just for a few minutes, completely stop thought. When I’m in a bad place or when I’m having trouble shutting off the chatter in my head, a guided meditation is really helpful and there are so many good ones out there. I like meditations that includes some breath work because they helps me to focus more quickly.
What is my point?
Begin today to act as if…
Walk and talk as if you are a confident, beautiful, successful, abundant, happy person. You get to decide whether you let negative emotions and anger take control over your life or if you use your time to practice gratitude, meditate, visualize, and choose kindness toward yourself and others. This is the ultimate kind of self care because it actually changes you in a positive way.
What if…children learned this at an early age? What if…your life could be an example to others?
What if…just by choosing our thoughts and taking time to take care of ourselves in a positive way, we could…one person at a time…change the world? You do not have to be defined by your past because you can create a future that’s different and you can show others that it’s possible. In my mind, there is no better gift. Your dreams are meant to be lived!
Create your life with memories in mind…it will be a beautiful one. ~ Melanie Ann Layer
This post was originally meant to be a post about wearing neutrals into fall, but I got a little off track. I love wearing white jeans all year round and they’re such a great transitional piece. My Tory Burch sandals from last season are brown pony hair with grommets and add a definite fall dimension to this outfit but also are perfectly appropriate for right now. It can be easy to transition your summer clothing just by changing up your bag and shoes, or adding a long sleeve linen blouse (to a pair of shorts). I’m linking my exact and similar sandals in the boutique below.
I hope this post serves you in some way. My life is not perfect, but the practice of meditation has had a profound effect on the quality of my life and what I believe is possible! If you would enjoy a guided meditation video from me, geared toward women in midlife…please leave a comment in the box below.

I totally agree with this post 100%! Would love a guided meditation. Thank you Suzanne 🙂
Hi Jeana
Thank you so much for reading and taking the time to comment! I’ll work on a meditation and keep you posted!
Always love your posts, Suzanne! Not sure if you have ever listened to Cathy Heller’s podcast – "Don’t Keep Your Day Job"? She talks about the same steps to take and is a big fan of Joe’s. I’d love the guided meditation you referenced. Thanks for encouraging women to embrace their beautiful lives and to make beautiful memories with the one life that we each have to live.
Hi Kim
I have not listened to Cathy Heller’s podcast, but I will definitely listen on my walk in the morning! I do love a good podcast! Joe Dispenza is amazing and his research into the benefits of meditation are so inspiring. I’ll email you the link to the exact meditation I’m listening to! I have found his work so inspiring that I’m planning to go to one of his 5 day retreats as soon as I find one that’s not already sold out! Thank you for your very kind comment!
Hi Suzanne.
I think if you just took a huge deep breath and RELAXED, you’d be in a much better place. You post a lot about being in a good place but you don’t come across that way. I think you truly DO try to live a perfect life and that’s just not realistic. Things happen and instead of mediating about it, just live through it. It’s okay if you have a bad hair day, or your house is cluttered, or you’ve eaten unhealthy foods, or you’re not fashion forward. It’s even okay to have lived through a crappy childhood. I think a good portion of us have. The only person who is worried about that is YOU. I don’t know if you’re trying to convince your audience that you’ve got the secret to life or that’s your goal in life. It should be just about liking yourself and loving your family and friends. I actually enjoy reading your blog but many times when you post the outfit flatlays, perhaps reevaluate your readers. Who seriously wants to buy a $400 top? I enjoy when you wear Loft outfits and when you post more reasonably priced clothes, but you live in a very small town in NC and it just seems weird to me that you have opportunities to wear Valentino shoes. You ALWAYS look gorgeous, keep doing what you’re doing but relax. Everybody has bad days. Just plow through them. No need to revisit.
Keep posting clothing articles. When I see you’ve posted your flatlays, I no longer open those emails. I’m sure it’s a waste of time for others. Unless you like to fantasize about what your dream wardrobe could be. I enjoy your recipes and seeing your house.
Just something to think about. You’ve said before you like feedback from your readers.
Hi Cindy
Where to start…
I am so glad you posted this comment because I never want to come across as anything but honest. We all have good days and bad days and I am incredibly blessed to have the life that I do. I write about the hard things I’ve been through not because I want anyone to feel sorry for me, but because I know that everyone has been through hard things and I feel that I have come through the other side in such a huge way and I want other women to know it’s possible to change your life and have hope.
I also know 100% that most people live with constant thoughts of things that have happened that keep coming up in their lives and that they struggle to get past. Those thoughts affect the present moment and keep them from moving on. I was like that and still from time to time go back to those hard things in my mind…BUT I know better and I now know how to bring myself back to a better place and that’s what I want to share with others. My intent is to help, not to complain.
I also believe that meditation is crucial to quiet the chatter that is constantly going on in our heads. As I said in my post, it has helped me immeasurably and I look forward to the quiet time when I commune with the Divine every morning.
As for the fashion…you would probably be very surprised at how many pairs of expensive shoes I sell. I love nice clothes and shoes and have a mix of expensive things such as Valentino shoes (which I do wear out to dinner in my little town as well as when I travel) and great dresses from Target. It really doesn’t matter where you live or how much you spend…it’s how what you’re wearing makes you feel. Again, I’m blessed to be able to buy nice things, but I also love a deal which is why I post things from Target and Loft. Don’t assume that everyone agrees with you! My audience is diverse and I’m beyond grateful for that!
As I’m writing this, I’m sitting on my porch at Bald Head Island, drinking a glass of wine, and listening to a podcast. I just happened to open my computer to see my comments when I saw yours. I’m completely relaxed and looking forward to a sunset sail on Wednesday evening with my husband who I’m glad I’m still married to in spite of our hard times!
Again…I do sincerely appreciate your feedback.
Suzanne, I definitely didn’t want to offend other readers and I’m truly sorry that some misconstrued my post as “mean.” I hardly miss reading your actual posts and I DO definitely think you’re being honest. I just was relating the feeling that I was getting. Like maybe you do sweat some of the smaller stuff.
Enjoy the rest of your vacation. Everything is better at the beach, for sure. And I think you’ve mistaken me for a different reader regarding your marriage. Girl, I’ve been married for 38 years and if anyone EVER says marriage is easy, they are probably lying. Every marriage has highs and lows and it’s how you get through them that makes your marriage stronger. And if you’ve been through tough times in your marriage, the fact that you’re still together means you’ve got a good, strong relationship.
Again, sorry if I came across as rude. I really do enjoy your blog. I just want realistic dialogue from all women. I couldn’t stand being on Instagram because it all felt so fake to me. The women in our age group just focused SO MUCH on beauty and clothes and ANTI-AGING (which is ridiculous because guess what? No one gets outta here alive). So if your readers want to dream about unaffordable clothes in a time where we should be focused on more sustainable ways of dressing then keep on keeping on. It’s about what the readers want. Take my opinion with a grain of salt.
Hi Cindy
When I said that I appreciated your comment, I really meant it. I realize that it was your opinion, but it was also helpful to me and very thought provoking. I like your honesty even if I don’t agree with everything you said. You are right about interesting dialog! I hope you’ll keep reading and are able to take what’s right for you from my posts! Have a really wonderful day!
I needed this today! Thanks so much for posting!
Nelly
Hi Nelly
Thank you for reading and I’m so happy to hear that this post spoke to you!
Suzanne, I love your flatlays (whatever that is). Cathy is assuming to speak for all of us and I certainly don’t agree. I thoroughly enjoy your posts of this nature and yes I can’t afford a $400 top but that doesn’t mean I don’t like looking at them and drawing inspiration from an outfit. Sometimes what people view as “constructive criticism” comes across as just mean!
I would love a guided meditation. It is always so hard for me to quiet the mind chatter and just breathe.
Thank you Suzanne!
Hi Ruth!
You have supported me from the beginning and I can’t tell you how much that means to me! I feel that my readers are very diverse in many ways and I try to post for everyone. Like you, I gain inspiration from fashion magazines such as Vogue and Harper’s Bazaar and only dream of owning a Chanel jacket or many of the other items that I see in the pictures, but I do get inspired about how to style things from my own wardrobe that are similar.
I am going to work on a guided meditation because I hear from so many that focus is very hard. People want to meditate, but there are mixed messages about how to do it and what is best. The one thing for sure is that science has proven that meditation is very beneficial to our physical as well as mental health! Stay tuned and again…thank you!
Sorry, Rita, I thought this was a democratic country. I wasn’t giving constructive criticism, I was just giving an opinion. It’s not MY blog. And again, I read most of Suzanne’s posts and enjoy them. When you put yourself out to the public, be prepared for DIFFERENT POINTS OF VIEWS. That’s what makes this world a great place. And honestly, isn’t this what makes life interesting, Rita? If everybody agrees with everyone else and no one had differing perspectives on life, what a BORING place we’d live in. So you’re welcome from me for adding some zest and spice to this discussion. I really like it! It’s all good!
Hi Suzanne,
I am another who has tried meditation but found it very difficult to quiet my mind. Any tips or techniques you can give would be very appreciated because I agree that the mind is such a powerful tool once properly harnessed to work with us, not against us!
Hi Dagmar
Meditation is different every day for me, but the key is every day. The more you sit and the more you practice the better your meditation becomes. I’m encouraged and excited by the sweet comments on this post and will work on some guided meditations. Thank you for reading!
Hi Suzanne, double love this post and so needed it tonight! Love this relaxed outfit and as always, you are gorgeous! Rocking that relaxed curly hair too my friend! I always enjoy your blogs! You are such an inspiration, several years ago, your articles helped me out of a funky state I had slipped into. Thank you! From November 2020 until now I have been thru some very hard and exhausting challenges (my sister’s unexpected death, an adopted teenager she left behind to help and my 89 year old mother fell in April 2021 and broke her hip that required surgery) so to say the least, I’ve been quite busy this year! It’s been hard but I’m starting to see some light, praise God! Anyway, thanks for this blog, it’s just what I needed and I would love tips on the meditation as well! Keep shining my beautiful friend, we need more Suzanne’s these days! Much love always!!
Hi Patty
I am so sorry to hear about your sister and I know your heart is breaking over her death. What a blessing that you are able to take care of her daughter…teenagers are difficult even when they grew up with you and it takes a special person to step in. She is blessed to have you in her life. I do also know about dealing with aging parents…we are definitely at that age. All the unexpected things in life can be a challenge to go through but I’m so happy you’re starting to see some light.
You have always been so encouraging to me and encouragement from friends like you has kept me moving forward when I doubted myself. It makes my heart happy to know that what I wrote was helpful to you! I will keep you in my prayers and I’m sending you my love as well!
Hi Suzanne,
Just wanted you to know that I really love your posts. They are imaginative, thought provoking and always interesting.
I too am a follower of Joe Dispenza, have read several of his books. I also have some of his meditative tapes but they are hard for me to understand. So would it be possible for you to send me the link to the one you like?
Thank you so much!
