Why Public Art is Important in Communities
Some of my favorite cities have the most interesting and beautiful murals (love the murals in Nashville!). Some murals are thought provoking, some tell a story, some are colorful and fun and most are fabulous works of art. The community I live in hasnβt had many murals in the past, but finally theyβre starting to pop up. I spotted this one the other day and knew I would be back for pictures! However, I believe that murals are so much more than good picture taking opportunities.
Murals reflect the the culture of a community. The experience of public art starts a conversationβ¦it inspires us to move from the everyday into the possibilities of what can be. When a community is brightened by art in the form of murals, sculpture, or beautiful green spaces, it immediately becomes more appealing. Communities with public art are more walkable and welcoming and public art can transform areas that were once avoided into places where people want to be.
Murals in particular offer accessibility to art and creativity to those who might otherwise not be able to access it because there are class barriers associated with museums and galleries. Public art is visually aesthetic, and promotes strong communities and when a community is stronger, the people who live are happier! Iβm so glad that our community is finally embracing the benefits of public art!
I decided to have a little fun when styling my outfit for this post and match the mural. My coat (last seen here) which is very old from Ann Taylor, really popped with white jeans and yellow snakeskin booties and I went all in with a yellow blouse and bag!
Looking up at this huge mural, I was trying to imagine how one would even start such a project! It truly is a work of art and a great addition to our community!
I would love to know your thoughts on murals and public artβ¦do you have murals in your community and if so, which ones are your favorites? Please let me know!
Thank you for reading today! Happy Monday!
