How I’m Dealing with Our Current Events

Every morning, I get up early and meditate…then I get a cup of coffee, and scroll through my Instagram feed. I’ve made friends on Instagram…I can’t wait to see what those friends are wearing, doing and eating. I make comments, I always smile at what people post, and it’s a fun part of my day that I look forward to. On Blackout Tuesday, when I woke up to mostly an all black Instagram feed, it felt really weird. While I completely understand and support what went on, I kind of missed my ritual of getting a glimpse into the lives of the people that I’ve come to know on Instagram.

One thing I love about Instagram is that we get to share our lives with others in a creative way. The need to create, for me, has always been there and has been expressed in different ways over the years. I’ve always loved to cook and make food look beautiful, and starting a catering business was my first creative endeavor. I love to paint, and really wish I had the time…maybe I’ll pack a canvas and take it to the beach this summer. I’m also learning to become a better photographer and learning about my camera is just part of it. The other important part is being able to capture special moments and portray a feeling with pictures. However, as you know, this blog has become my creative outlet and Instagram is an extension of that.

I share on Instagram every day and I think sharing is important for people who consider themselves to be creative, even though I believe we are all creative in some way. When I see what others share, it’s also a form of listening…reading their quotes and feelings about many different things. Reading, on Instagram, and of course in other ways, (books, blogs, etc.), what people have to say and how they feel about something is a conversation about hopes, fears and dreams. Sharing our lives can have an impact on the lives of others, even if it just brings a smile. During the last few months, when our new normal was completely turned upside down, sharing and being part of my Instagram community has helped me to feel uplifted and also inspired to be more creative. I love the visual of a pretty picture, reading a message that someone wants to share, or learning about a new way of doing something. The world needs sharing – a glimpse into the lives of others who live differently than we do, and I believe that spreading a positive message, a beautiful picture, a quote, etc. can make a difference.

Having said all of that, I’ve realized that my Instagram feed is, for the most part, full of people who look and are similar to me. That has started to change as people share black fashion designers, companies and activists. I’ve followed accounts that will make me think outside the box, show me new perspectives and expand my world. Here are a few of the accounts I’ve followed…I hope you’ll take a look.

@sweetpotatosoul – this account is jus t fun and the pictures of food make me hungry!

@darrylcarterdesign – beautiful interiors

@plantbasedrd – amazing plant based recipes

@justinablakeney – colorful interior design

@laylafsaad – inspiring and thought provoking

@aliette – fabulous fashion

The whole situation in our country has caused so much discomfort and I’ve chosen to watch things that have disturbed me instead of looking the other way in an effort to understand the emotions of the protestors and the fear and rage that has been unleashed in this country. I also want to be more a part of communities that are different than mine in the hope that I will gain a better understanding of what is going on and how I can be part of positive change.

It is important to me that out of respect for people are hurting that my posts continue to be thoughtful and also helpful. I would love for you to share any thoughts on this and also any other Instagram accounts that you are following. Thanks so much for reading today!

    I follow accounts that inspire me or I have something in common with. I can’t relate to black hair care products or skin care routines..so I’m not going to follow someone simply because they’re black. If I like what they write about, if it makes me think or inspires me..that’s a reason to follow

      Did you take a look at any of the accounts I linked? All of them are fabulous and extremely inspiring…beautiful interiors, yummy food and fun fashion. You might want to take a look because obviously you didn’t. I think the more that we realize we have in common, the better the world will be!

    I appreciate the links you have provided and have begun to explore them. For me, your blog is about a lifestyle, not so much about being blonde. I am interested in any blogger that represents that lifestyle and it is exciting for me think that people of colours, ethnicities and sizes might be visually represented here and thoughtfully explored for their points of view. I look forward to the time when we encourage and celebrate any and all with open heart and appreciation for talent. Let’s expand our horizons, not narrow them down.

      What a fabulous comment! I just love how you’ve so very eloquently stated this. Until we start to share more experiences and understand our neighbors, we’ll never be united. There are so many things to celebrate about our differences and our similarities! I so appreciate that you took the time to comment! Thank you!

    Being the daughter of a Presbyterian minister I was always proud of my father as he led communities in which we lived to love and respect one another, no matter what the color of our skin. And to celebrate differences. Thank you Suzanne, for offering new ways to celebrate the beauty around us. NW

      Hi Nancy

      Your father was a wonderful man and he had a huge influence in my life. It’s so important to realize that we’re all just people and right now there are people hurting that need our help. It’s a very small thing to follow Instagram accounts, but it’s something we can all do (and enjoy doing) to show support. Thank you for your sweet comment! Sending lots of love to you and your mom!

    Hi Suzanne,
    Everything has been difficult these past few months, and then the last weeks things just kind of exploded. I can relate to so much of what you expressed here today. I appreciate that you recognized something that you would like to do differently and I believe following your instincts will be fulfilling for you. (I’m going to follow your lead)
    I have been unsure how to proceed with my instagram account because, as an artist I felt my paintings spoke for me. But, they are mostly bright and colorful, and the world hasn’t felt that way for quite a while! I thought maybe people would be offended by them. It felt wrong, somehow, to continue along the same path of cheerful posts with pretty flower paintings, but now I realize that everyone needs a bit of uplifting during trying times. I decided to dedicate a portion of all sales from my “Little Art Sale” happening throughout the weekend, and all future sales, to organizations that make a difference in our communities.

    I appreciate the links you posted and will check them out. I need more diversity in my life as well. It’s something I’ve thought about for a long while, but never really followed through so that will change and I thank you for doing some of the sleuthing for me!
    XO Heidi

      Hi Heidi
      You are always a ray of sunshine in the world and I do believe that the world needs your light right now! I love that you are giving a portion of your sales to organizations that are helping with our difficult situation. I think everyone handles things differently and we will probably never go back to what we consider "normal", so we just have to proceed in the best way we can. I know you’ll love the Instagram accounts I’ve linked. I had fun finding them and scrolling through! Thank you so much for always commenting commenting!
