Blepharoplasty – Eye Lift Surgery…My Experience

01

Three weeks ago, Monday, I had blepharoplasty, or eye lift surgery.  I knew going in that I was going to share this on Crazy Blonde Life, so today, I’m really putting myself out there!  I want to be clear that I’m not writing this post because I want to have a discussion about plastic surgery.  Clearly it’s something that I embrace because I did it!  I’ll say this as nicely as possible because I don’t want to have to deal with negative comments…your opinion is none of my business.  This post is for anyone who might be considering the surgery and is curious about what it might entail.  Having said that, here we go!

I have been noticing for quite some time that the bags under my eyes were getting baggier!  I have my picture taken nearly every day for this blog and it had started to really bother me.  When we were in New York in early December, I caught a glimpse of myself in a mirror and absolutely didn’t like what I saw.  I decided then that I was going to have this procedure done.  I don’t feel old and I don’t want to look older than I am.  I want to look the best that I can.

This is the best way to explain the cause of puffy eyes – puffy eyes are that aren’t related to fatigue or allergies are caused by eyelid fat prolapse, or orbital fat.  The eye sits in a space called the orbit and this space has fat in compartments.  To improve the appearance of bags under the eyes, the fat can be removed repositioned and sculpted.

The first two of the pictures below are before pictures and I’m wearing no makeup.  I think the light was just better in the second.  The third picture was taken yesterday and obviously I was wearing some makeup.  All of the photos are completely unedited!

These pictures were taken immediately after surgery.  I was awake for the whole thing and the worse part was being numbed.  The needle was unpleasant to say the least.  The incision on my eyelid didn’t relate to the surgery.  I had a scar that I wanted to have removed and figured I might as well do everything at once.  The little dots are needle pricks from Botox.  I’m holding nothing back here! (For more about my Botox experience, click here)

This picture was taken the following week.  I had stitches below my lash line and they dissolved.  I think  considering what I went through, the bruising was minimal.  I kept ice packs on my eyes pretty much constantly for the first two days and then off and on for the next week.  I did go out after the second day with sunglasses on.  I had absolutely no pain after the surgery, but I took one pain pill the first night just so I could sleep.

I used a whole box of Trish McEvoy Triangle of Light Eye Pads.  They felt soothing and I think they helped with the bruising and swelling.  I also took arnica before and after the surgery to minimize the bruising.  I was able to cover the bruising somewhat with Laura Mercier Secret Camouflage Concealer followed by Laura Mercier Secret Brightening Powder and actually went out to lunch less than a week out.

Most of the pictures are selfies taken with my phone, so the quality isn’t great, but I tried to document the progress.  I am very pleased with the surgery and have just a tiny bit of a bruise left at three weeks out.  I think I look more rested and even though it was unpleasant, I would do it again…and might in 10 years or so!

I hope this post has been informative.  If you’re interested in reading more, this article is very good.  Once again, if you don’t agree with plastic surgery, I totally respect your opinion, but please don’t leave a comment about it!  I’m saying that again because I had a really negative comment on the post I did about Julie Miles, the jewelry designer, that I deleted.  There is no place for negativity on this blog!  It’s all about inspiring, uplifting, informing and FUN!

I hope you all have a great day!  Thanks so much for reading!

Thank you for sharing! As a breast cancer survivor, I’ve had a great deal of surgery already, though none if it was cosmetic surgery. I’m trying to avoid any more! But this is the only surgery that I actually WANT, so its good to read actual experience. Can you share the costs of the procedure?

    • Suzanne Smith says:

It’s much more expensive to have it done in an operating room and be put under by anesthesia! All in it was around 3000.00. It truly wasn’t that bad! I’m glad to know that you’re doing ok! Have a great weekend!

  5. Emma Peach says:

Thank you for sharing this Suzanne! I think a lot of ladies are afraid to admit to having cosmetic surgery or botox because there’s still a stigma associated with it – like somehow it’s cheating, which I think is ridiculous. The results are great and I’d definitely consider having it done!

Thank you for that comment! I figure if you’re going to do it, you might as well talk about it! Have a great weekend Emma!

How could anyone have said anything negative about the Julie blog!! I’m Annie and my daughter and I were showing Julie’s beautiful dresses off. Such a fun afternoon! Thank you for blogging your experience…I want to get mine done now you look fantastic 😘

    • Suzanne Smith says:

Some one evidently thought that she used fillers in her face, but it’s her auto-immune disease! Her body produces too much collagen. You are so sweet to read and comment! Let me know if you get the surgery!

  9. jacqui says:

I love that you have done this post, well done. You should be very proud and you look amazing (you did before anyway). I agree with any negativity, people should keep it to themselves – it’s up to you what you want to do with your body. x Thanks again. Jacqui

You are an angel for posting this! I try to stay far away from doctors, and the very idea of elective surgery gives me shivers! But THIS! This I NEED! Keep being fab! Thanks so much

    • Suzanne Smith says:

You are so sweet! I tried not to think about it too much before the fact! The numbing really was the worst part…and the sounds! I could hear everything!

  11. Sandi says:

I love that you posted this.
My mom always said the thing. She didn’t want to look younger, just wanted look like the "best" her.
I don’t have bags but I am losing my eyelids. LOL
I would love to do something like this.
You look great and thanks again for posting.

  12. JC says:

Im scheduled for this exact procedure in May. Thanks for sharing your journey. Best summary Ive seen . It helps

  13. JC says:

there are two tpes of surgery Im told. One is to go in within the lower eye into the eye socket or inside the lower lid – and that requires no stitches .
The surgery you had is outside the lower lid and therefore the stitches. Why did you opt for the exterior one?

  14. Karen Brooks says:

Thank you for sharing your experience Suzanne. I have been thinking about getting an eyelid lift because they are dropping over my eyes and I can’t stand it. It makes me look older when the rest of my face is in pretty good shape for 55. I have been a bit nervous about it so reading what you went through helps me understand what I would be in for when I do this. You look beautiful!

    • Suzanne Smith says:

The worse part really is the surgery itself and then feeling like you’re stuck in the house! Let me know if you do it!

  15. This is a fabulously informative post and thank you for sharing. You look beautiful before and after but I know how it is to want to look how you feel. I exercise and eat right to stay in shape but there is not a lot I can do with my face. I started dysport in January and will look at other options as time goes by. Its fun to share our experiences and learn from each other. As always, love your blog!

Thank you Cheryl! I am not familiar with dysport…can you tell me more about that? Thanks for reading and I love your blog as well!

  16. Barbara says:

Thank you for sharing this! I am unhappy with how my skin has sagged UNDER my eyes. Would this type of surgery help this?

  17. patti says:

Thanks for sharing this brave post, Suzanne! You look gorgeous both before and after, but I do see more of a twinkle in your eye. Thanks for linking up to Vis Monday, xox

  18. Angela Muller says:

    Hi Suzanne,
Thank you for this brave and honest post. The results are wonderful! While there are changes in my face that I’m not happy about, I wouldn’t risk facial surgery because I’m considered a "bad" healer. My scars don’t form thin lines, they resemble twine, which takes years and years to disappear. Fortunately, those surgeries were on my body and not my face. I think it’s important for a person to know how they heal before attempting any kind of facial surgery…and also finding a top notch surgeon. Having said all that, I love your result!

  19. Teri says:

So interested to read this Suzanne, thank you for being brave enough to share. I’m on the verge of having something done & researching like crazy. I’m starting off with a skin resurfacing program, some prp around my eyes & hyalauronic filler around my mouth. I’m 58 & like you, don’t want to look older than I feel… thank you for inspiring me… 💕💕☘️

  20. Linda Wu says:

The after surgery images looks surprising, amazing results. Although i find myself to be double thinking about undergoing incision, I saw this website about non-surgical eyelid lift, what does anyone think about it?

  21. Claire says:

Thank you for sharing. I had to read some of the stories about this type of surgery until I got the courage to undergo it myself. It took me almost two years until I booked myself at Forme clinic. I was so scared because it was my first surgery. Now I am very happy about my younger look and I do regret I did not do it earlier. I had it also in local anaesthetic and I did not feel any pain during and after the surgery (that was frightening me the most)

    • Suzanne Smith says:

      Hi Claire

I am so happy to know you had the surgery! It is a little scary the first time, but so worth it! I feel that I also have a younger look and putting on my makeup is so much more fun!
