Portrait of a Lady Perfume is like a piece of opera. It’s a perfume with a voice. It’s a blend of elegance and the spectacular. It’s all about sensuality…if it were a painting it would be a Renoir nude. It’s a sublime moment that comes out of a bottle.
Frederic Malle had the idea for Portrait of a Lady because he remembered the scent of a mouthwash that his father had used when he was a boy. He adored the smell.
Frederic is an esthete and had a vision… he took the freshness, spice and benzoin notes from the mouthwash and made Geranium Pour Monsieur for men.
Later when Frederic was wearing Geranium Pour Monsieur, he had the idea to take the basis of this cologne and turn it into a scent for women by adding a huge burst of rose. Portrait of a lady was born out of that idea and has the equivalent of 400 roses in one bottle. This perfume is lovely and elegant and appeals to everyone. It’s like an accessory, a superb piece of jewelry that makes the wearer feel stronger, chicer. This perfume is worn by young women in jeans and sneakers and women like me (older, but also in jeans and sneakers much of the time). Portrait of a Lady is the elegance of the past turned into a piece of modern perfumery. It’s a beautiful sublime perfume!
When I first smelled this perfume, I knew I had to have it. My daughters and I were in Bergdorf Goodman and were introduced to Portrait of a Lady by a makeup artist working there. All of us went crazy over the scent and of course, I bought it on the spot. For the rest of the trip, we all used it and became obsessed.
We all love the St. Regis Hotel and the King Cole Bar and went several times during our trip. It’s such an elegant place and the service is perfection!
It is also a tradition for us to eat breakfast at the St. Regis every trip and as we were being seated, the hostess recognized the scent of my perfume immediately and said it was her favorite. Portrait of a Lady has an intoxicating, recognizable and beautiful scent…it smells expensive!
This perfume has now become my signature scent, after 25 years of wearing Jo Malone Pomegranate. I may go back to my Jo Malone when the weather gets warmer and I do still love it, but for now, during this holiday season, Portrait of a Lady is for me!
Only 12 days until Christmas! I have so much to do, but hopefully today will be productive! Check out my Instagram stories later to see what I’m up to!
