What's wrong with wine today?
Money, Toxic Chemical Farming, and Toxic Additives
Over the last 40 years, the wine industry has undergone massive corporate consolidation. Nearly 60% of US-made wines are produced by just 3 companies.ΒΉ And nearly 90% of all US-made wine is produced by just the top 25 wine companies.Β²
Only 5% of all vineyards in the world are organically farmedΒ³. Grapes have been shown to contain significant levels of pesticides. In an annual ranking of produce with the highest levels of pesticides called the βDirty Dozen,β grapes were the 8th highest.β΄
Unlike other US food and beverages, wine bottles do not require a nutrition label or an ingredients label. This is because wine content is actually regulated by the Treasury Department, not by a food agency.β΅,βΆ The wine industry actively lobbies against transparent labeling.β·
There are 76 additives approved for US wine making. While many are safe, others can be toxic. 12 of these legal additives are classified as βhealth hazards'' by the National Institutes of Health.8 2 of them are considered βacute toxins.β 9 10 4 of them are derived from 6 different animal organs.11 8 of them are derived from various molds, including the mycotoxic Ochratoxin A.12 13

Iβve found the solutionβ¦Dry Farm Wines!
Dry Farm Wines is a company founded by Todd White in 2015 (read the story here), that offers a unique selection of natural, organic, and low-intervention wines. They prioritize wines made with minimal intervention, low sugar content, lower alcohol levels, and the wines they offer are sourced from sustainable vineyards. Dry Farm Wines is a community of health-conscious people who care about what they put into their bodies and who care about Mother Earth. I first discovered Dry Farm Wines through my neighborβ¦she invited me over to share a special bottle of wine and it was amazing!
I might seem (from my description above) that drinking wine just got very complicated, but in truth, conventional wines are the more complicated winesβ¦the conventional wine industry doesnβt talk about their growing methods, which are horrible for the environment, and the additives (including sugar) and colors that are added to the wine.
Dry Farm wines is choosing to raise awareness about the wine industry and offers wines that consumers can enjoy with confidence! These wines are not only healthier but also support a more sustainable and environmentally friendly wine industry!
βNaturalβ wines are very much in vogue in the US right now (even here in Burlington, NC), and their popularity continues to increasing as people become aware of the environmental and health benefits of these wines. The problem is that βnaturalβ doesnβt have any legal meaning where the production of these wines is concerned, unless you live in France, so you have to know (and trust) the winemakers, importers, and retailers who are offering them in order to understand whatβs in the bottle. Thatβs the beauty of Dry Farm Winesβ¦theyβve done all the legwork for you!
Dry Farm Wines places a strong emphasis on the quality and purity of the grapes used in winemaking and they source their wines from small, family-owned vineyards that practice sustainable farming methods. These vineyards prioritize the health of the soil, the vines, and the surrounding ecosystem, resulting in grapes that are more vibrant, flavorful, and expressive. By supporting these vineyards, Dry Farm Wines promotes a more sustainable and regenerative approach to winemaking and by purchasing these wines, you are supporting small family farms and the environment andβ¦you are getting fabulous tasting wines.
The concept of curating and distributing natural, organic and low interention wines is unique in the world of wine. The main difference between Dry Farm Wines and regular wines lies in the production process and the quality of the grapes used. Regular wines often contain additives, such as sugars, sulfites, and other chemicals, which can alter the taste and affect your health. Dry Farm Wines, on the other hand, focuses on wines made from sustainably farmed, organic grapes, without the use of any additives or chemicals. This results in a purer, more natural wine that is not only better for our bodies but also offers a unique and authentic taste experience.
Other important distinctions between conventional wines and Dry Farm Wines are the alcohol content and the sugar content.
Regular wines typically have an alcohol content ranging from 12% to 15% or even higher. Dry Farm Wines, on the other hand, are generally lower in alcohol, with most falling between 7% and 12%. This lower alcohol content not only makes the wines more approachable and easier to drink, but it also reduces the risk of overconsumption (and hangovers are not fun)!
Regular wines also often contain a significant amount of residual sugar, which can contribute to a higher calorie count and potential health issues. Dry Farm Wines are carefully selected to be sugar-free or have very low sugar levels. This makes them a great option for those who are following a low-sugar or ketogenic diet, or simply looking to reduce their sugar intake. I always say that I would rather drink my calories (jokingly), but if I can have a fabulous glass of wine with fewer calories, Iβm all in!
