Layering With Jackets

It seems lately that my fashion posts are centered around the weather…it’s been very unpredictable here. Last week the temps were in the 70’s and today, I woke up to 37 degrees…it’s hard to know what to wear, so jackets are an integral part of my wardrobe this time of the year.

At times, I try to overcomplicate my outfit, but the truth is, I like my basics and they are the foundation of my wardrobe. In the pictures below, I’m wearing a faux suede brown moto jacket from Charlie B (they have the cutest affordable pieces) that I’ve already reached for several times. Underneath, I have on a sleeveless sweater that I found in a little boutique in Nashville (check out my Nashville Travel Guide) several years ago. The jeans are new this season from Veronica Beard and already hard to find and you’ve seen the Gucci loafers in a previous post.

I’m finding that my style ranges from boho to classic to just jeans and a tee…depending on my mood and what I have going on. It’s really hard to nail down just one way to dress (or one style) because I’m so inspired by many different styles. The one thing in my closet that is front and center is and always has been jeans, although, I’m consciously trying to wear other things at this point in my life!

Anyway, I thought I would talk about layering with jackets today because jackets run the gamut from slouchy to moto to looser jackets and everything in between and they work with everything.

Leather and faux leather jackets are a stylish essential for our wardrobes. Jackets are effortless, practical and versatile, making them perfect for layering over cozy sweaters or dresses. Whether paired with jeans for a casual day out or thrown over an evening ensemble, jackets are the go-to choice for adding a touch of sophistication and attitude to your look.

Consider styling your suede and leather jackets over various outfits, including dresses, turtlenecks, or graphic tees. Mix textures by pairing a sleek leather jacket with a chunky knit sweater or soft cotton for contrast.

The fit of your jacket is important and speaks to the look you’re trying to achieve. An oversized jacket can create a relaxed, trendy look, while a fitted jacket can bring more of a sophisticated look. Try different silhouettes to see what complements your body shape best.

As far as accessories…again, for me this depends on my mood. Some days I want to keep it simple and some days, I’m in the mood to wear statement jewelry. To elevate your look, accessorizing with jewelry, scarves or belts to define the waist, especially when wearing an oversized jacket.

Shoes complete the outfit…ankle boots, loafers, sneakers, or heels can completely change the vibe of the look. For example, pairing a suede or leather jacket with heeled boots can create an edgy yet polished appearance. Loafers are a more classic and practical choice for a busy day.

Try pairing a rugged leather jacket with a feminine dress, printed blouse, sweater dress, or tailored pants for a more unexpected look.

As for handbags…they definitely make a statement as well and are an important part of creating a pulled together look. I have several of the Tory Burch Lee Radziwill bags and find them extremely versatile! I’m also loving the bags from Madewell this season!
