Sometimes you see something and it calls to you and that’s what happened when I saw this gorgeous marigold yellow sun dress. I was in Spain and we popped into Zimmermann because my friend was looking for a dress to wear to a dressy event and thought she might find something there. Well…she didn’t find anything, but I spotted this dress immediately and thought it was just so pretty. I didn’t try it on, but I couldn’t get it off my mind.

A few days later, I had a couple of hours on my own and decided to go back in to the shop and try on the dress. Trying it on only made me love it more because it fit as if it were made just for me. The straps are adjustable and I love that they’re somewhat wide. The fitted corset bodice, covered buttons and beautiful floral pattern with birds are details that elevate this dress even more. The fall colors make it ideal for days or evenings that are still a little warm and this dress can be dressed up or worn with sandals. I think it really is the perfect dress.

After trying on the dress, I still didn’t buy it. I asked them to hold it while I went and had a bite for lunch so I could think about it. I wandered around the port and found a fabulous little place for lunch and devoured a piece of salmon with veggies and pondered. After lunch I decided to go back and get the dress and I’m very happy with my decision. I ended up wearing it to a fashion show that we were invited to and got so many compliments!

This is a dress that I’ll keep forever and hopefully one of my daughters will wear it someday although, I can’t see loaning it…they’ll have to wear it after I’m gone. I’ll loan them lots of things, but not this one!

Fall florals are going darker and richer this year. Instead of the bright, tiny prints we see all summer, the look now is blossoms set against deep backgrounds like burgundy, espresso, olive, plum and navy. The prints themselves are softer too… think blurred watercolor petals and vintage botanical illustrations rather than sharp, busy patterns. Shapes have more structure, with tiered maxis, midi lengths and puff sleeves that add a little drama and movement. My marigold Zimmermann fits right into this with its rich fall colors and fitted corset bodice, which were really the things that immediately stood out when I first saw the dress.

My gold sandals from Tory Burch were the perfect shoe for walking around the cobblestone streets in Old Town Marbella. The heel height is perfect and they’re very comfortable.

The dresses I’ve linked range in styles but are all somewhat dressy or versatile enough so that they could be dressed up or down. Wear a floral dress to a luncheon, Thanksgiving, a fall wedding or out to dinner. You’ll feel put together and feminine in these fall florals!

This dress will always remind me of my trip to Spain and bring back the memories each time I wear it. I’ll think about popping into the shop with my friend, going back on my own to try it on and wandering around the port while I decided. I’ll remember that little lunch spot and the salmon I ate while I pondered. That’s what I love most about buying something special when I travel… it’s not just a dress, it’s a piece of the trip that I get to bring home and keep with me.
